VIENTIANE, LAOS

Authorities of Vientiane Capital Water Supply State Enterprise are calling on the general public in the capital to conserve water during the celebration of Pimai Lao next week to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of water in the society.

General Manager of the Vientiane Water Supply Enterprise, Mr Khampheuy Vongsakhamphoui made the request at a press conference on April 5 at his office.

“The current production capacity of the four water plants in Vientiane Capital is only 280,000 cubic metres per day.   This is less than is required to meet demand which stands at about 320,000 to 340,000 cubic metres per day,” Mr Khampheuy said.

The celebration of the Lao New Year on 13-16 April will happen during some of the hottest weather of the year.  It is feared that Vientiane residents will use more water than is available which will cause shortages.

As the result, we are calling on the public to cooperate and work to conserve water.  Locals have also been advised to store water in the tanks, he said.

The four water plants are Dongmakkhai, Dongbang, Chinaimo and Khaoliew.
