Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone Visits Flood-Hit Khounkham

VIENTIANE

 

(KPL) Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, accompanied by ministers, visited Khounkham district, Khammuan Province, which had been flooded recently.

 

Due to torrential rain, between Jul 27 and Aug 3, water in the Hin Boun river and the Nam Hai river burst the banks and flooded people’s houses and other property, roads, and farmlands.

 

Fourteen villages (over 2,800 families) were flooded. Of these communities, nine villages were severely flooded.

 

Over 6,100 ha of farmlands, including 2,000 ha of rice, in 22 villages were flooded.

 

Over 986 ha of cassava crops, and 289 ha of banana plantation, and 66 ha of rubber farmland were also damaged by flooding.

 

Almost 17,000 cows, buffaloes, pigs, and goats, and almost 15,000 poultry were swept away by flood waters.

 

On this occasion, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone appreciated relevant authorities and people in the province for extending relief items and financial aid to the flood victims.

 

He called on provincial and district authorities to observe surveillance of possible natural emergencies and follow weather forecasts as well as be cautious about dengue fever and seasonal diseases that may break out in the aftermaths of the natural disaster.

 

 

 

The Prime Minister also presented 50 million kip each to three districts –Khounkham, Hinboun and Nakai. Governor of Khammuan Vanxay Phongsavanh received the aid package on behalf of the beneficiary districts.

 

The premier also presented relief items to families severely affected by the flooding.
