Curtin Malaysia’s Department Of Built Environment Hosts Workshop To Foster Understanding And Adoption Of New MYCESMM2 Standard

MALAYSIA

Miri – 27 September 2023 – The Department of Built Environment of Curtin University

Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences successfully organised a workshop to introduce relevant stakeholders to the new MyCESMM2 standard.

The standard, aimed at facilitating the preparation of Bills of Quantities (BQ) for civil

engineering works, tender document submissions, and tender costings in the industry, was

met with enthusiasm and active participation from various professionals.

The workshop, conducted in a hybrid format, saw a diverse group of 54 attendees joining

online, while six participants were present physically at the event. This inclusive approach

ensured the involvement of key stakeholders, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing

within the industry.

The participants comprised Quantity Surveyor (QS) consultants, contractors, academics

from institutions of higher learning, construction management students, and staff of Curtin

Malaysia. With such a diverse mix, lively discussions and insightful exchanges were the

highlight of the workshop, contributing to an engaging learning experience for all involved.

Professor Vincent Lee, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor and advisor to the workshop, expressed

his satisfaction with the event, stating, “We are delighted to have hosted the MyCESMM2

workshop, providing a platform for key stakeholders to familiarise themselves with this

important industry standard. The widespread participation and active involvement

demonstrate the industry’s commitment to staying updated with the latest developments and

practices”

Workshop chair Dr. Low Wai Wah, meanwhile, said the workshop aimed to enhance

participants' understanding of the new MyCESMM2 standard, emphasising its impact on the

preparation of Bills of Quantities and tender processes. By providing a single measurement

standard, the MyCESMM2 standard seeks to streamline project management and promote

efficiency within the civil engineering sector.

CESMM is a Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement that incorporates rules and

regulations for measuring various parts and elements of a major civil engineering project. In

Malaysia, the standard has gone through different stages of updating, evolving from the

CESMM introduced in 2001 to the MyCESMM in 2013. Through rigorous adaptation

of CESMM3 (UK), CESMM4 (UK) and current local practices, the standard is now

known as MyCESMM2.

The event featured a presentation by industry expert Ts. Sr. Dr. Zakaria Mohd Yusof, who

has served in various roles at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) for over 30 years. He

holds a Diploma in Quantity Surveying from UTM and a Master of Science in Construction

from Loughborough University of Technology, United Kingdom. He completed his PhD in

Technical and Vocational Education (PTV) at UTM Skudai, and was formerly Director of

Lifelong Learning at UTM’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (UTMSPACE).

Additionally, practical demonstrations and interactive sessions ensured participants gained a

comprehensive understanding of the MyCESMM2 standard and its practical implementation.

The workshop also encouraged networking opportunities among attendees, fostering new

collaborations and partnerships within the industry.

The Department of Built Environment at Curtin Malaysia is committed to delivering high-

quality education and research in the field of civil engineering and construction management.

With a focus on industry relevance and practical skills development, the department equips

students with the necessary knowledge and expertise to excel in their careers and contribute

to the advancement of the built environment sector.

The Department of Built Environment plays a crucial role in educating students and
