WORLD SPORTS

Brazil striker Richarlison has conceded Tottenham's chances of qualifying for the Champions League are slim but he is optimistic they will be more competitive next season.

Sunday's 4-2 defeat at Liverpool was Spurs' fourth consecutive Premier League loss and left the them fifth on them table, seven points adrift of Aston Villa, who are fourth in the last Champions League qualifying spot.

However, Richarlison has seen some improvement in their play this season, and is hopeful they can continue to build.

"Look, we presented a much more dynamic and, let's say, more elegant and beautiful football than last season," the Brazil international told ESPN.

"But we have evolved, we have evolved a lot and I believe that, as of this week, it has already been announced that the coach will make changes, so I believe that next season he will be putting together a much more competitive team."

The 26-year-old admitted qualification for the Champions League this season is unlikely.

"The last four games have not been easy for us," Richarlison said.

"We're coming off four defeats, it's difficult, but there's nothing we can do about it. Of course we wanted to play in the Champions League, there's still a chance, but it's a little difficult."

Spurs, who are suffering their longest losing run since November of 2004, have played one less game than Aston Villa and need to get maximum points from their remaining three fixtures. But even that may not be enough.

"There's nothing to do," Richarlison said.

"Just work, go to the next game, which is at home, and see what will happen until the end of the season," he said.

Tottenham host Burnley on Saturday.
