Nursing and midwifery are the backbone of healthcare that has grown to a great extent, from providing bedside nursing care services to other highly technical and advanced duties.

These noble professions must be protected, appreciated and respected. Nurses are the key to a healthier community, responsive society and a developed economy.

This was among the contents of a message from the Minister of Health in conjunction with International Nurses Day. The theme 'Our Nurses. Our Future.

The Economic Power of Care' emphasises on investment in the nursing sector that is capable of influencing and bringing benefits to the economy and society in general.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health also called for all nurses and midwives in the country to always be patient in providing the best services, and maintain high dedication in carrying out their daily tasks.

Responsible and attentive nurses and midwives make the country's health system more sustainable and of high quality, which in turn can drive economic and community development.

There are several policy actions of the International Council of Nurses' Charter for Change, ICN to protect and appreciate nurses and midwives such as protecting and investing in the nursing profession to rebuild the health system to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage to improve global health.

Urgently address and improve support for the nurses' health and well-being by ensuring a safe and healthy working environment and respecting their rights, and developing, implementing, as well as financing nursing workforce plans with the objective of self-sufficiency in the supply of future nurses.

The Ministry of Health strives to further enhance the nursing services in the country. Among the initiatives implemented to improve patient care quality is by emphasising the International Patient Safety Goals, IPSG as the Key Performance Indicator, KPI in nursing care assessment.

This is a continuity of last year's initiative which was providing a more comprehensive clinical monitoring system for Nurses by emphasising Patient Safety in each implementation of care and treatment for patients in line with the policies that have been prepared by the Ministry of Health.
