BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Muslims were encouraged in yesterday's Friday sermon, to manage their negative emotions and exercise patience, to prevent the destruction that anger can inflict upon families and the rest of society.

The sermon defined anger as falling into two categories: praiseworthy anger and blameworthy anger.

Praiseworthy anger was described as the moral, virtuous level of anger over injustices and misconduct, as such expressed by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he saw some flecks of spit in the section of the mosque facing the Qibla.

After giving a stern reminder to the assembled congregation that no one should ever spit in that direction again, the - Prophet then rose and wiped the spittle away himself.

The sermon encouraged Muslims to follow the Prophet's example: although he was angry, he did allow his emotions to control him.

Instead, he used his anger effectively, for a more practical outcome.

Blameworthy anger, on the other hand, was defined as a negative and counterproductive emotion, particularly when causing people to utter blasphemies and inflict pain on others.

The sermon concluded by urging Muslims to take responsibility for their own words and actions, since uncontrolled anger often 1 leads to problems with many negative consequences.
