China has granted over 48.6 billion kip (almost US$6 million) to Laos for surveillance of possible animal diseases crossing borders in Vientiane Capital, Luang Namtha and Phongsaly Provinces.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Chinese government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the cross-border animal disease control project on Mar 22 at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The MoU was signed between Director General of the Planning and Cooperation Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr Xaypradeth Chounlamany and Vice Director of the Department of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation under China's Ministry of Commerce, Mr Zeng Huacheng in the presence of relevant official of both sides.

The implementation of the MoU aims to prevent and control animal diseases crossing borders and also contributes to a development strategy for the production of foodstuff and food security in Laos.

It also promotes the purchasing of live animals and animal products between the two countries of Laos and China, and links to ASEAN and international markets as well as boosting solidarity and cooperation between the two countries.
