Bruneians Watch Giants Go Up The
Sky From Land Of Rising Sun

Begawan – Kite enthusiasts in the country had the chance to
watch and experience flying some of the world's largest and
spectacular kites from Japan yesterday.
The event, which was organised by the
Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, in
cooperation with the Japan Foundation and the Brunei-Muara Kite
Association, was to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the
Brunei-Japan Diplomatic Relations.
Japan’s Shirone Association conducted
the flying demonstration of the giant kites, or “Odako” and Ten of
these giant kites were displayed.
The biggest kite during his
demonstration was the blue "Odako" which bore the flag of two
countries.
According to a member of the Shirone
Giant Kite Association, the kite measured 5.5 metres by 3.6 metres and
took five people to fly it.
It takes five days to make it using
bamboo as the frame and Japanese paper.
Another type of Japanese kite
demonstrated was the smaller kite in consecutive arrangement called "Ren-Dako"
which means "Kite Train".
Among the spectators at the event,
which was held at the Tunku Beach, was the President of the
Brunei-Japan Friendship Association, Dato Haji Hamdillah.
The event provided the chance to
experience and capture the spirit culture and traditional life style
