GoodMILES Plays Host To Special
Children
By Ben Ng
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Special children from Hong Kong Red Cross Society,
who are on a brief visit to the Sultanate, we retreated yesterday to
an afternoon of entertainment with popular Hong Kong celebrity,
Miriam Yeung, who made a guest appearance at the Orchid Garden
Hotel.
In conjunction with International
Disabled Day, GoodMILES Sdn Bhd played host to the special children,
along with several sponsors - McDonald's, The Empire Hotel and
Country Club and Coco's Chocolate Paradise - with the cooperation of
Persatuan Kaca.
Attending the event as the guest of honour was Datin
Paduka Hjh Intan Hj Md Kassim, Acting Permanent Secretary of the
Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports.
Also present was Kaca's Managing
Director, Hj Abdul Alim Hj Othman.
He said that the children needed to
explore and develop their self-esteem by giving them a chance to
prove their determination as an active part of the community.
Ten children from the Princess
Alexandra Red Cross Residential School and Margaret Trench Red Cross
School were joined by 15 children from Kaca, along with their
assistants.
The event hoped to provide a new
atmosphere for the children, making them aware of their environment,
which in turn, will help them grow confidently leading them to a
brighter perspective towards life.
In a speech by the guest of honour,
she stressed the importance of equal rights for disabled people and
how it has been receiving increasing recognition and attention in
the recent years.
"The World Health Organisation
estimates that there are about 650 million disabled people
worldwide, which constitutes about 10 per cent of the world's
population. This makes them the world's largest minority group and
the numbers are increasing due to factors such as war, unhealthy
living conditions, poverty or the lack of awareness of the causes,
prevention and treatment of disabilities
"The majority of people with
disabilities live in less developed countries where people lack
access to essential services such as health care," she said.
The United Nations has declared Dec
3 as International Day for the Disabled, with the aim of promoting
and understanding issues related to disabilities and to mobilise
support from the community. -- Courtesy of Borneo
