Health Research Plan Blueprint In The Works

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Template to be used in producing the National Health Research Plan as well as research priorities are expected to be presented at the end of the two-day Health Policy Planning and Health Systems Research workshop, which started yesterday.

Ministry of Health Policy and Planning Director Hjh Fatmah PJDSMDSU (Dr) Hj Md Jamil said the workshop will help in preparing the ministry's Research Blueprint as part of the initiatives under its strategic objective.

"It will be a policy document containing strategies and milestones for our National Health Research Plan," she said yesterday at the launch of the workshop at The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

"The blueprint will incorporate both health policy and systems research as well as medical research and ethics," she added.

Hjh Fatmah explained that the workshop will not only help to identify issues and priorities to be added to the health research agenda, but also set achievable targets and milestones of health research.

"The workshop will revolve around prioritising our research agenda and greater focus will be given to identifying health policy and systems research agenda with equal prioritisation with the medical research and ethics," said the director.

"Lack of research capacity and all the other important elements affect the quality of research and hence the information generated from it.

"This will lead to lack of effectiveness in decision making and policy development," she said, adding that the roles and importance of research have been long recognised by the Ministry of Health.

"In the past 10 years, a number of health-related research projects have been implemented encompassing health care service delivery as well as laboratory and scientific researches," said Hjh Fatmah.

The workshop is being attended by some 50 participants, mostly senior Ministry of Health officers.

Officiating the launch of the workshop was Deputy Minister of Health Pehin Orang Rap
Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah.

The ministry's Health Research Committee, formed in June 2008, aims to manage, monitor and promote research activities in the ministry.
