Educators Urged To Adopt Learner-Centred Teaching In Classrooms

Bandar Seri Begawan - The traditional role of teachers, as all-knowing individuals, downplays students' role in the teaching-learning process where the teacher-directed learning is based on assumptions that learners need to know only what the teacher teaches them and this results in a learning environment that creates dependency on the teacher.

Thus, such environments contradict what is required in the 21st century where leaders and knowledge workers are more adaptive, innovative and able to learn independently. To address these needs, the teaching-learning process should also promote flexible learning thereby inspiring students to achieve their goals in life. They should also be treated as adults who possess useful knowledge and experiences.

Every member of the classroom regardless of what his or her diverse learning needs are, a learner-centred teaching and methodologies can help design effective instructions for them and since it is adaptable to meet every students' need, it will not only offer more relevant activities but also assist them in performing better in the workplace.

The "Experience in Applying Learner-Centred Teaching and Learning Methodologies" half-day forum, organised by SEAMEO VOCTECH as part of its regulator training programme for 18 participants from the 10 Asean member countries, offers an insight on how to apply learner-centred teaching and learning methodologies based on the experiences of two well-known Brunei teachers/ trainers.

The event was held yesterday morning at the SEAMEO VOCTECH premises. The forum was also attended by more than 20 teachers from vocational and technical schools as well as colleges.

SEAMEO VOCTECH conducts regulator training annually for 18 participants hailing from the 10 Asean member countries including four from the Sultanate who comprise teachers from vocational schools and technical colleges.

The forum also witnessed the running of two sessions. The first was a presentation delivered by the HOD of Mathematics at Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College, Mr Masaaki Takahashi followed by the second session by Business Counselor (CLW/1) at LIVEWIRE Brunei Darussalam, Mr Steven Song. The event concluded with a question-and-answer session.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
