Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei's head coach of athletics, Mohamad Shahjohan bin Hj Sahri is aiming to double the haul of gold medals in the athletic event at the 3rd Borneo Games from the previous record of three gold medals.

The games hosted by Brunei Darussalam for the first time will see a total of 53 top local athletes mostly below 21 years old representing the country in various track and field events. A total of nine sports will be contested at the games from Nov 9 to Dec 6. In an interview with Mohamad Shahjohan at the training ground yesterday, he said: "Most of the athletes for the Borneo Games are in preparation for Sukma next year. They have been training continuously since last year's BIMP-EAGA games."

On his expectations of the Brunei athletes he said: "This is our home and our target is a record of six gold. In our previous outing, we have three gold medals. I also want the athletes to beat their own personal time.

"This time I am confident that my athletes can do well especially I can see that there are some talent in the squad," he added.

Listing down some of the events that he thinks Brunei have a chance of grabbing medals, he said: "In the sprint event, our hopes lies with Faisal Ahad while our middle runners of Haizul Rani, Hashady anak Jarah and Ak Hafy also have a chance of bagging some medals."

"In the half marathon, we have Sefli Ahad who is known for his long distance run in Brunei while the men and women relay teams are also in good shape. So I expect them to do well."

Besides the track events, he said: "I feel that Lin Chee Wee who will be participating in shot put will be one of the athletes to watch. On long jump, Jester Johnny Tan and Hj Khairul will be our best bets."

On the toughest opponents in the Borneo Games, he said: "I think Sabah and Sarawak will be sending their full squad. They are all strong competitors but I feel that our athletes, who have ample preparation, will be able to give them a good fight."-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
