Brunei Forges Diplomatic Relations With Trinidad And Tobago
Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei has established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced in a brief statement issued yesterday.
Latif Tuah, Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations in New York, signed a joint communique with his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart Marina Valere, with diplomatic relations effective from November 24, 2009. the statement said.
The announcement comes after His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Ministers Office, left the Sultanate last Saturday to join the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be hosted in the city of Port of Spain in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Chogm is the supreme body of the Commonwealth. It is convened every two years to review global, political and economic developments and to conduct a strategic overview of the Commonwealth's work in support of the interests of member countries.
CHOGM 2009 in Port of Spain will be held November 27-29.
According to the official CHOGM website, the objective of this year's summit is to engage leaders of the Commonwealth in discussing global and Commonwealth issues and to agree upon collective policies and initiatives.
All nations, regardless of size, have an equal say and vote at this meeting.
All CHOGM decisions and initiatives are reached only by consensus, the website said adding that CHOGM are distinct from other international meetings in that heads of government meet in an informal retreat setting.
Trinidad and Tobago extended their international relations further yesterday, with African Press Organisation (APO) reporting that Seychelles and Trinidad and Tobago established diplomatic relations yesterday.
