Kuala Belait - Thirty-four dancers, singers and musicians from the Yunnan Province Cultural Dance Troupe in China stopped by the Belait Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCCC) yesterday, en route to Miri as part of their cultural roadshow through Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.
The show, according to the programme, involves various traditional and cultural dances showcasing some 25 different ethnic backgrounds. Troupe leader Wei Luo Luo explained that the troupe arrived in Brunei on Tuesday, and were hoping to perform in the Sultanate.
However, due to a clash of dates with upcoming celebrations for Maulud Rasul, Wei explained, "We were unable to secure a proper date for the one-night-only show and decided to just pass through on our way to Miri." The troupe received a warm welcome by BCCC President Pehin Bendahari China Dato Paduka Onn Siew Siong.
Troupe member George Guan Chong Sheng said the first thing he noticed when they first arrived in the country was, "Brunei is a very clean, peaceful and friendly country." "It's such a shame that we arrived here in the afternoon because we just only missed the National Day Parade," he said.
Still, he added, "It was nice that we saw the country all dressed up with flags and posters, giving us a hint of what the sights would have been if we were here only earlier.
"Because of the cancellation in our programme," he added, "we decided to visit Chinese community leaders and give them a feel of what our show could have been like." -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
