UBD Students Attend Summit For Future Leaders

Bandar Seri Begawan - With the intent of bringing back knowledge on leadership skills, two students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) left for Malaysia yesterday evening to attend the Career Summit for Future Malaysia Leaders (CASFUMAL) 2010.

Ak Hj Ahmad Fadillah Akhbar Pg Hj Sallehuddin and Mohammad Hilmy Baihaqy Hj Yussof will represent the university at the two-day summit.

Second year Sociology and Anthropology student, Ak Hj Ahmad Fadillah Akhbar said that he was hoping to get some inspiration from the summit on how to be a good a leader

"I feel in Brunei leadership qualities are what lacking in young people. I believe that being a leader is not something you are born with, but something you have to learn. You need to come out of your comfort zones and take charge," he said.

He added that he was hoping to exchange ideas with other youths who would be there and learn new things that could be applied and adopted in Brunei.

"Part of the early steps to nurture leadership skills is by involving youth in these kinds of projects," said Ak Hj Ahmad Fadillah Akhbar.

"I'd like to be a prominent young leader in the future, so I want to enhance my leadership skills and contribute to the building of the nation," he added.

A student of Bachelors of Science in Education, Mohammad Hilmy Baihaqy expressed hopes that he could learn from speaker at the summit.

"Most of the speakers are prominent leaders in business and government. The basic skills of leadership can be learnt out of a book, but I want to know how they withstand the pressures and the story behind their success," he said.

The selection for a spot at the summit was tough, said Ak Hj Ahmad Fadillah Akhbar. Hundreds of UBD students had applied for it, he added.

"We had to do a presentation on how we can nurture leadership skills in young person, and fortunately, the two of us passed," he said.

The duo are expected to hear a number of talks as well as meet with the Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Seri Mohd Najib.

They are scheduled to return home tomorrow CASFUMAL is an event organised by Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP). It is a convention where all Malaysia and other countries future leaders gathered in one place and mingle with each other to gain experience from renowned leaders of the host country. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
