Officials Plan Crackdown On Illicit Apps

BANGKOK

State agencies will issue a joint resolution governing improper and illicit content in mobile applications.

The Information and Communication Technology Ministry, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) will meet five mobile operators on Tuesday to discuss how to supervise mobile app content.

The meeting comes in the wake of a scandal involving the iShow mobile app in which a young man bought special items worth 1.2 million baht for ladies who chatted with him through the app, said NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith.

"We have to have better measures to prevent possible damage that could create a great impact on youth and children because smartphone use is so widespread, especially among teenagers," he said.

The government may have no need to draft any new law if existing rules and regulations are deemed sufficient to enforce proper measures to prevent or eliminate illicit content.

The TCSD will take legal action against those who create improper content that does not promote good morals, while mobile operators and internet service providers will have to seriously monitor content available through their platforms.

Mr Takorn said mobile operators must put in place a warning and blocking system to keep improper content out of users' hands.

"Parents must be aware of their children and prevent them from accessing improper content on mobile services," he said. "Meanwhile, mobile operators must warn their customers about the risk of unintentionally buying such services."
