SINGAPORE

A 58-year-old woman and her 36-year-old daughter were charged with the murder of their domestic helper on Thursday (July 28).

Prema S Naraynasamy and Gaiyathiri Murugayan allegedly killed Piang Ngaih Don, 24, a Myanmar national, in their Bishan flat sometime between Monday and Tuesday this week.

The court documents did not say if the dead woman had any injuries on her or how the alleged murder was committed.

Police said previously that they had received a call for assistance on Tuesday, at about 11am, at a ninth-floor unit at Block 145, Bishan Street 11.

When officers arrived, they found a woman motionless in the flat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The following day, Prema and Gaiyathiri were arrested.

On Thursday, the court agreed to the prosecution’s request to remand the pair for further investigations. They will return to court on Aug 4.

If convicted, they face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

After media reports about the murder surfaced, the chairman of the Centre for Domestic Employees (CDE), Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, posted his reactions on Facebook, saying that the CDE "will work closely with the authorities to see how we can offer help and support to her family".

"Through our various outreach efforts, we understand and empathise with the fact that the position of our foreign domestic employees is a uniquely vulnerable one. Thus, they are deserving of greater care and concern from their employers," Mr Yeo wrote.
