Brunei Relay Team Disqualified at SUKMA

 July 29th, 2016  |  08:58 AM  |   1131 views

PETRA JAYA, KUCHING

Brunei Darussalam's daily track and field programme for Thursday came to a brutal end following disqualification in the men's 4x100m relay at the Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya.

The athletics team was hoping to break the national record at a minimum in a competitive field which pitted Malaysia's fastest man and an athlete who was involved in a long-running saga over the national record.

A star-studded Malacca team comprising Asnawi Hashim, Badrul Hisyam Abdul Manap, Khairul Hafiz bin Jantan andMuhammad Azam bin Masri stormed to victory and in the process setting a new Games record with a time of 39.89s.

The Malaccan quartet comfortably smashed the old time of 41.04 which was set by the Sabah team in Terengganu in 2008.

The state team also nearly broke the national record of 39.83s which was set by Malaysia on their way to a silver medal at the 2001 SEA Games on home soil.

The Malacca team featured two young first-rate athletes capable of challenging the continent's top meets with Khairul Hafiz winning 100m gold and 200m silver in the prestigious Asian Junior Athletics Championships earlier this year and Badrul Hisyam part of the Malaysia team which captured silver in the same event.

The Sarawak relay team posted a time of 41.14s to win silver while Perak claimed bronze with a time of 41.94s. Pahang was classified as "did not finish" according to the official Sukma website results page.

Meanwhile, Brunei runner Asy Syafi'e Md Bohari put up a decent attempt in the men's 200m but fell short in his quest to nudge his personal best of 22.02s after posting a time of 22.22s.

Malacca's young star Khairul Hafiz could do no wrong after posting the first of two Games record in the 200m after

smashing the old mark time of 21.33s set by Terrenganu's Nazmizan Mohammad in Sabah in 2002 with an improved time of 21.14s.

The swimming contingent endured further disappointment in the 50m freestyle as Nurhaziq Samil finished a lowly 16th place with a time of 26.47s while compatriot Ashley Chai Xin Rou suffered the same fate with a time of 30.47s.

Earlier this week, Brunei's pencak silat hope Anisah Najihah binti Abdullah finished in 5th place with a score of 418 points in the female single solo preliminaries at the Indoor Stadium in Kota Samarahan.
