Thirty-five people from eight families lost everything when a fire broke out and destroyed a 60-year-old six semi-wooden terraced houses at Huo Ping Road about 11pm Thursday.

It is believed that the fire started from a house in the middle while most of the residents were fast asleep.

The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 11.37pm and 18 firefighters from Sibu fire station and 10 from Sungai Merah fire station in four fire engines were dispatched to the scene.

Sibu zone fire chief Abdul Mutalib Rashid said 55 per cent of six houses were destroyed.

He said there was no casualty and the cause of fire was still under investigation.

Most of the residents were just renting the place.

Personnel from the Civil Defence Department, police, and Sesco went to the scene to assist the victims.

Officers from the Welfare Department yesterday went there to identify the fire victims and gave each one of them RM40 to buy cooking utensils, RM70 for clothes, RM70 for students to buy school uniforms and RM50 for books.

Each family also received RM2,500 for buying building materials.
