Indian Man Gets Caning, Imprisonment for Groping Woman's Breast

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Magistrate's Court sentenced an Indian shop attendant yesterday to eight months of imprisonment and one stroke of the cane, after finding him guilty of groping a customer's breast.

Silambarasan Gunasekaran, 30, groped the breast of a 31-year-old female customer at a shop located in the Serusop area, at 3.05pm, on January 17, 2015.

Chief magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli found Deputy Public Prosecutor Shamshuddin bin Haji Kamaluddin's case proven beyond a reasonable doubt, especially with CCTV footage on the incident tendered as evidence.

Gunasekaran, who was represented by defence lawyers Nur Ahmad and Lisa Tan, claimed throughout the trial that it was a mere accident rather than a sexual act.

However, the court found inconsistencies in his statements, in the light of eyewitness testimony, and dismissed his claims.
