Brunei Confident of Beating Chinese Taipei in Netball Championship

 August 6th, 2016  |  05:27 AM  |   1001 views

BANGKOK, THAILAND

Brunei Darussalam national netball coach Thilaka Jinadasa believes her side has a good chance of snatching victory against Chinese Taipei in the 5th to 8th place playoff of the Asian Netball Championships in Bangkok, Thailand today.

The Royal Bees lost 56-33 to Chinese Taipei in the group stages in the last edition in 2014 but Jinadasa feels her trusted personnel can outperform their players who were promoted from the Asian Youth Netball Championship in 2015 in the rematch.

The Brunei youth team beat Chinese Taipei youths 50-37 in Hong Kong last year and this is where the head coach feel can work in their favour.

"I believe this year we have a better chance of beating them (Chinese Taipei) because I noticed this team have few youth players from the Asian Youth Netball Championship in 2015," Jinadasa told the media.

"In 2015, we beat Chinese Taipei by a reasonable margin," added Jinadasa who guided her native Sri Lanka to Asian Netball Championship glory in 2009.

Jinadasa updated the conditions of the players who are feeling the effects of muscle soreness and bruises though there are no fresh injury concerns.

However, Jinadasa expects her charges to shrug off those concerns and put up another heroic display on court as they seek to win 5th spot.

"I am sure they will play well on the court as usual," Jinadasa affirmed.

"Of course almost all of their players are taller especially in both ends which are a good advantage but it does not mean we can't give a good fight of winning.

"We can win and make good changes. It is about how smart they play on court," she concluded.

The winner of the match will face either Thailand or Japan in the fifth place playoff while the losing team can only finish seventh at best against of the abovementioned sides.

Brunei finished third in Group 'B' after a set of losses against Sri Lanka and Malaysia after starting the campaign with a 51-20 win over Japan.
