Bomb Hoax Suspect Released on Bail

 August 7th, 2016  |  08:29 AM  |   1592 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Gadong bomb threat suspect was released by the Magistrate's Court yesterday on bail of B$5,000, or one local surety, while the case was fixed for further mention on September 3, 2016.

The thirty-nine-year-old defendant, Awangku Ariffin bin Pengiran Mohammed is being assessed for his mental health and DPP Aiman Zakaria sought for time to look into the report and investigations on the case.

Senior Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah binti Hussain released the defendant and ordered him to come back to court by then.

Allegations have it that the defendant called the emergency hotline 993, transmitted a message which he knew to be false or fabricated, alleging the presence of a bomb in the vicinity of a supermarket in Gadong at 11am on July 11, 2016.

Police and emergency response teams moved in to Gadong on that day, sealing the building and evacuating the public as they tried to locate the bomb.

Hours later the commercial area was re-opened after the emergency response team found no real threat of a bomb.

Investigations led to the defendant's arrest later that night.

The penalty for an offence under Section 45 (a) of the Telecommunications Order 2001 is a fine not exceeding B$50,000, maximum imprisonment of seven years, or both.
