The following is a message by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in conjunction with the celebration of Asean Day:

We once again celebrate 'Asean Day' on August 8. This gives us the opportunity to reflect on our collective achievements, and recognise the importance of this association in advancing regional peace, prosperity and harmony.

In our first year as an Asean Community, there is great optimism amongst our peoples.

Not only is this a milestone in the integration process, but it is also a commitment to lasting peace, vibrant economic growth, and an inclusive community.

The aims and purposes of Asean set out by its founding members have enabled the Association to be a firm platform upon which to build trust, expand cooperation and bring benefit to all its citizens.

As we reach the 50th anniversary of our association next year, Asean has shown resilience and an ability to evolve and adapt in the face of challenges, while positively contributing to regional and international developments.

We congratulate the Lao People's Democratic Republic for their excellent work as Chairman this year, especially in leading Asean into a new chapter of community building.

In this regard, we express our continued support for their efforts under the theme 'Turning Vision into Reality for a Dynamic Asean Community'.

I wish all Asean friends and colleagues a very happy Asean Day.
