Culture and Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy said on Monday the “full-day school” system he had proposed for all elementary and junior school students aimed to protect them from spending their day engaging in wasteful activities.
With the full-day school system, he said, children would not be alone when their parents were still at work.
“With this full-day school system, the character of school students will be built up in stages so they won’t get involved in pointless activities when their parents are still at work,” he said as quoted by kompas.com, on the sidelines of his visit to the Malang Muhammadiyah University (UMM) on Sunday.
Muhadjir said by staying at school after their learning hours, students could finish their school assignments while they were waiting for their parents who would pick them up after their work hours.
With the system, he said, children could go home with their parents, ensuring that they would be still under their parents’ supervision until they arrived home.
Muhadjir said that in the full-day school, various activities could be held for students after their school hours. For Muslim students, they could recite Quran verses together, in which their schools’ management could invite an ustadz (Islamic teacher) with an educational background. (ebf)
