Permanent Resident Fined $14,500 for Smuggling Contraband

The Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday ordered a forty-one-year-old permanent resident to pay a fine of B$14,500 or face a year imprisonment in default after he pleaded guilty to two charges of smuggling contraband items into the country via the Kuala Lurah Control Post in April last year.
For the first charge under Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Order 2006 and punishable under section 146(1) (i) of the same, Sania bin Haji Junidi was found to have in his possession 37 cartons and three packets of cigarettes of various brands inside his vehicle following inspection by customs officers on April 18, 2015 as he was making his way back into the country from Limbang, Sarawak.
The second charge which carries the penalty under Section 140(1)(iii) of the Customs Order 2006 was for the possession of prohibited goods that he also attempted to smuggle into the country.
Customs officers found 14 packets of chicken wings and bishop nose worth over B$400 put inside a bag at the front passenger's seat of his car and also at the foot rest of the passenger's seat.
Upon investigation, the defendant admitted that he had purchased all the seized goods are for his personal consumption.
