A local man pleaded guilty to being in possession of smuggled cigarettes yesterday in the Magistrate's Court and was fined B$4,000 or six months' jail in default of payment.
Awang Haji Md Noor Adam bin Ahmad paid B$2,000 yesterday and pledged to settle the remainder in B$300 monthly instalments.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman heard that the defendant said he had nothing to declare for import to a customs examiner on duty when he arrived in his car at the Kuala Lurah Control Post at 11.15pm on May 2, 2016.
The examiner then inspected the car and found ten cartons of cigarettes hidden in a bag and kept in the rear passenger foot well.
