RBAF at the Forefront in Protecting Brunei from Security Threats

BRUNEI-MUARA

The growth of non-conventional threats worldwide has resulted in the evolution of defence throughout several nations with Brunei's military being no exception to challenges that require change in security operations.

Over seven days until tomorrow, members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) have been and will be tested in their capabilities to be better acquainted with potential threats the country could face with scenarios, that many within the military are not privy to as a means to test their responses, specifically designed with the intention to emulate real-life events.

The likes of terrorism and riots, pointed by RBAF Commander, Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah in an interview on the sidelines of His Royal Highness Prince General Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), and General of the RBAF's observation of the fifth instalment of Exercise Hikmat Bersatu, "are common scenarios that we see almost every day in the media with terrorist attacks happening around the world and they can happen anywhere at any time," of which includes security-related incidences within the region.

"Riots or public disorder are also a common sight even close to our country. So these are realistic security challenges that we, as security personnel, are expected to be able to contain or handle," he assured.

Though the military is primarily designed or prepared to counter conventional threats from conventional forces, such as military invasions, it was assured that despite limited jurisdiction in combating terrorism and riots, the military is set to become more involved in operations against these forms of threats.
