A driver spent a night sat in his car on a cliff top after he tried to drive down a walkway.

The motorist considered climbing out of his window, but there was a 200ft drop outside.

He got stuck between the walls of the walkway near Dunquin, RoI, while looking for somewhere to camp for the night.

He was eventually found the next morning by a crew member for Blasket Island Ferries and his vehicle was freed several hours later by police.

Sibeal Ni Lubhaing, of Blasket Island Ferries, said: ‘He was in serious shock at how and where he got himself stuck. I think he just froze, the poor guy.

‘Looking out the driver’s side is a sheer drop of around 200ft, so maybe it dawned on him at that stage how serious the situation was.’

The man is believed to have been stranded from 10pm last Tuesday night until midday on Wednesday.

Sibeal added: ‘When the crews found him, he was reluctant to leave the car… I think the shock hit him and he wanted to stay in the vehicle.

‘But, when he saw the police uniforms, he seemed more reassured and we were able to get him out through the boot.

‘It was fairly innocent, everyone makes mistakes. Because it’s our busy season there was a lot of people here this morning who saw what happened.

‘I’m glad he’s ok! He won’t be taking any chances again with little roads off the beaten track as they say.’

Irish police confirmed that they attended the scene and helped the motorist.
