A thirty-nine-year-old Malaysian man was yesterday ordered to pay a B$6,500 fine by the Bandar Magistrate's Court after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of smuggled cigarettes.
The defendant, Talaha bin Mohaban, failed to settle the fine immediately and was ordered by Chief Magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli to serve four months' jail.
The defendant arrived at the Kuala Lurah Control Post at 8am on August 13, 2016 with his family and denied having brought anything to declare for import to the Customs examiner on duty. The defendant's car was inspected which led to the discovery of 21 cartons of cigarettes hidden in a plastic bag and under the front passenger seat.
The Chief Magistrate ordered the cigarettes to be forfeited and dealt with by the Customs Controller, and the return of the defendant's car.
