BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Magistrate's Court yesterday ordered a woman permanent resident and local man, each to pay a fine of B$1,500 after they pleaded guilty to being in possession of smuggled cigarettes.

Aluyah binti Sidi, 61, and Abdul Muehiez bin Amri, 26, would have to serve a month in jail if they fail to settle the fine by February next year.

Magistrate Azrimah binti Abdul Rahman, presiding in the case yesterday, heard from theCustoms prosecutor that the duo were arrested by tipped-off Customs preventive officers who raided Abdul Muehiez's residence in Kampong Biong, Jalan Rambai, Tutong at 1.05pm on April 6 for selling cigarettes from their home.

Officers found a total of eight cartons and 24 packets of cigarettes hidden in various places around the house which the duo jointly admitted owning a portion of the cigarettes and the rest.

The Magistrate ordered for the cigarettes to be forfeited and dealt with by the Customs controller.
