Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is collaborating with Malaysia Innovation Hub (MIH) to commercialize inventions and innovations developed by its students and researchers.

The university yesterday sealed a memorandum of understanding with MIH, under which it will recieve support in marketing research products both locally and internationally.

Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said the collaboration will see both parties sharing technical experties, facilities and other resources in research and development (RnD) activities.

“The collaboration will benefit both UMS and MIH,” he said during the signing ceremony held at the university’s main campus here.

He said the agreement also includes the setting up of a special purpose company for introducing innovative products developed by UMS to Malaysian and foreign markets.

Through the spin off company, he said MIH would be able to apply for funding from the government or interested investors for the commercialization of the products.

“We have won many awards at the international level but the challenge is how to get these award-winning products to be applied by the industry and community. Through this collaboration with MIH, we hope to leap forward and achieve greater success not just for UMS but also Malaysia,” he said.

Representing MIH at the signing ceremony was its chief executive officer, Vincent Wong Wai Seng.

Harun said the joint effort between UMS and MIH was in tandem with the government’s effort to boost the commercialization of innovations of public universities in the country.

The setting up of the company to lead the commercialization of UMS products will also directly contribute to the community by creating new employment opportunities.
