Chinese Man Fined $1,500 for Possession of Smuggled Alcohol, Cigarettes

A Chinese man paid a B$1,500 fine as ordered by the magistrate's court after pleading guilty to being in possession of smuggled alcohol and cigarettes.
Fifty-year-old Zhai Liguo, working as a cook at a Temburong project site, was carrying six cartons of beer, four bottles of wine and a carton of cigarettes in a vehicle at Ujong Jalan Control Post, Temburong at 3.30pm on August 15.
Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman heard from the Customs prosecutor that the defendant was stopped by Customs examiners at the control post where his vehicle was inspected and found to have the contraband.
The defendant brought the contraband in from Limbang and intended to bring them home for his own consumption and the wine for cooking.
