BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A local man was charged in court yesterday over the death of his three-year-old niece two days ago in a case that has gone viral on social media.

The man is accused of causing the death of the girl at 8.30am on August 17, 2016.

The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) is conducting further investigations into the case after having arrested the man Wednesday night at 9pm.

DPP Nurjauinah binti Haji Kula asked the court for time as the investigations are still in their initial stage.

Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman ordered the defendant remanded at the Central Police Station in the capital and to return to court after two weeks for a further mention of the case on September 1, 2016.

The charge, which is one of culpable homicide, carries a penalty of a maximum jail term of 15 years, or a fine, or both.

Earlier, the RBPF issued a statement to say that the RBPF received a report through the 993 hotline that a three-year-old girl was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The RBPF also warned the public against spreading news, photos, information or messages that are inappropriate, incorrect or unreliable that could threaten public order which is a offence that can lead a person to being prosecuted and sentenced to a jail term of up to three years or a fine of $3,000 under Section 34 of the Public Order Act Chapter 148 (Public Order Act, Cap 148).
