Local Man Accused of Raping Mother-In-Law Released on Bail

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A fifty-four-year-old local man who allegedly raped his 64-year-old mother-in-law was yesterday released on bail by the High Court, seeing that the Magistrate's Court had adjourned the case to give way to a pending medical report on the victim.

The unnamed defendant was produced in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, where the prosecution provided developments on the case.

DPP Zuraidah Sidek said that doctors are still assessing the victim. Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman ordered the defendant to come back on September 3, 2016 and remitted the case to the High Court for bail application.

In the High Court before Justice Dato Paduka Hairol Arni bin Haji Abdul Majid, the defendant was released on B$10,000 bail or on two local sureties.

The defendant, whose identity is being withheld to protect the victim's identity, is alleged to have raped the victim in a bedroom at their government flat in Temburong around 9pm on August 7, 2016.

The defendant faces a penalty of imprisonment of up to 30 years with whipping, if found guilty.
