The Departmentof Meteorology and Hydrology, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, is warning people, and especially those living along the Mekong river in Vientiane Capital and Borikhamxay, to be cautious of possible flooding and landslides over the next two days – Aug 23-24.

Yesterday’s measurement of the water level in the Mekong indicated that the tide had reached 11 m and it is expected that the level will exceed the warning level of 11.5 m. The danger level of the Mekong is 12.5 m.

“People living in lowlands and near the Mekong River should take precautions by keeping valuable property and animals in safe places, preparing sand bags to build flood dikes in at risk areas, and updating themselves with announcements of the Meteorology and Hydrology Department on a regular basis,” the department said in an announcement on Monday.

Last week in Bokeo, one of the northen provinces encountering flooding, estimated that damage caused by recent floods and landslides in the districts of Pha-oudom, Houyxay and Paktha was more than 600 million kip (US$74,000).

Following a series of thunderstorms between 12-15 Aug, heavy rains, landslides and flash flooding have taken place and caused damage in the five out of the eight districts in Bokeo Province.

The natural disasters caused damage to 130 ha of farmland, over 70 houses, transport facilities, and properties of local residents, according to local authorities.

The disasters also left livestock including pigs, cattle, and a number of poultry missing and 19 weirs damaged.

Currently, local authorities are mobilizing labour and financial support from various sectors to give relief aid to families suffering from the disasters, and to repair damaged roads and electric facilities.
