BRUNEI MUARA

The Magistrate's Court yesterday ordered an eighteen-year-old local man to settle a fine of B$8,000, or serve eight months' jail in default of payment, after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of smuggled cigarettes.

The defendant, Mohammad Yusrin bin Mohd Yusra, arrived at the Pengkalan Batang river in his boat at 12.05pm on August 5, 2016. Marine police saw the defendant making a turn and was chased by Narcotics Control Bureau officers who also spotted the defendant throwing cigarettes into the river.

The defendant was detained at the intersection of Sungai Riong not long afterwards.

The two enforcement teams inspected the boat and found 20 cartons of cigarettes which had no import permit.

Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman presided in the case.
