Two people have reportedly been killed by a flooding event in Luang Prabang and another in Bokeo. In addition, almost 200 farms, 257 houses, four schools, 13 irrigation facilities as well as transport facilities and people’s property were damaged in Luang Prabang.
Disaster-caused losses of livestock of local people were also reported in the two northern provinces.
The Social Welfare Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare on Tuesday donated 200 million kip (almost US$25,000) in cash along with relief items to Luang Prabang authorities to help the flood victims in the province.
The donation packages were presented in Luang Prabang by Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Khampheng Xaysompheng to Vice Governor of Luang Prabang Bouakhong Nammavong.
The relief items included 150 household utensils, 50 packages of clothes, water tanker trucks, mobile water purification trucks and empty water bottles.
Local companies also donated almost 3,300 sheets of corrugated roofing and 10 tonnes of rice, worth another 200 million kip to help flood victims in the province.
“Our department will continue to extend relief assistance to provinces affected by flooding events,” said Director General of the Social Welfare Department Mr Prasong Vongkhamchanh on Wednesday.
“Currently, there are other people in need of water for drinking and domestic use, although some of the districts have yet to report damage caused by flooding events to our department,” said Mr Prasong.
Following a series of thunderstorms from Aug 8-20, heavy rains, strong winds, landslides, and flash floods have taken place, consequently causing damage to property and farmland in several districts of Luang Prabang including Phonxay, Viengkham, Xieng Ngen, Nan, Luang Prabang, Phoukhoun, Chompet, Pak-ou, Ngoy, Nambak, Pakseng and Phonthong.
“Recently, our department has dispatched Emergency Rapid Assessment Teams to some provinces to collect data on the damage caused by the natural disasters,” said Mr Prasong.
