Al Idrus Junior and Menglait FC faced a nervy spell in the business end of the Brunei DST Premier League title run-in as either team could be crowned champions in the country's second tier league.
Newcomers Al Idrus have taken the league by storm barely a year after taking the long route through promotion from the Brunei-Muara District Football League while Menglait FC have been equally impressive after taking 11 points more than they did last season.
Menglait FC sealed promotion for the first time in their 34-year history in May and can look forward to top tier football next season.
The undefeated Al Idrus have excelled in their first test of national league football highlighted by their thumping 10-1 victory over Besa FC with former QAF hitman Adie Arsham Muhd Salleh grabbing a double.
Al Idrus, who sit top with 22 points, still need a victory to capture the Premier League title while a draw can see them overtaken by Menglait who trail the league leaders by a solitary point.
Al Idrus face IKLS FC on September 9 while Menglait FC play Setia Perdana two days later on September 11 with the possibility of the title already wrapped up.
The second tier Brunei DST Premier League resumed earlier this month after the fasting month and the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities as Al Idrus' wins over Kilanas FC and Besa mean they take a slight edge on the title race.
Al Idrus can still win the title with a draw but Menglait must not take more than a point in their final game of the season.
Shall Al Idrus lose their only game in the season on the fmal day and Menglait draw, the destination of the title will depend on how many goals the former concede in the defeat.
If Al Idrus lose by a two-goal margin, their goal differential will be 18 and the title could possibly go to Menglait if they draw who currently have a goal differential of 19.
However, if Al Idrus lose by a single goal and Menglait FC draw, both teams will finish the season with the same goal differential.
This season has witnessed the closest title race in the history of the second-tier competition after past seasons have shown that the winners have cruised to the title including Lun Bawang in 2014 and Kota Ranger FC in 2015.
