China is not imposing its political system or values on other countries, said an Australian scholar.
Some Western leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, began to describe the competition with China in "starkly ideological terms," which was reminiscent of the Cold War, Hugh White, a professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University, said in an article published earlier this week on the website of Australian think tank the Lowy Institute.
"There is no evidence that Beijing seeks to remodel the world in its image," he quoted former Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Varghese as saying.
"The Communist Party of China will do whatever it can to protect its own system from being undermined from without, but ... it does not seem to believe that this requires the rest of the world to adopt its model," he said.
Besides, he pointed out that although China's economy grew quickly, that is not the same as imposing a Chinese-led global order, let alone one that inflicts China's political system or values on other countries.
He admitted that the Western political systems faced serious threats. "But those threats come from within, and not just in America," he said.
