Police carried out a controlled explosion at the weekend on what is believed to have been a pesto sandwich.
Borough High Street was closed off on Sunday afternoon leaving people trapped in a Sainsbury’s and a nearby pub.
Officers detonated a brown bag near a bus stop.
Upon investigation once police had left the area, a witness discovered the exploded pesto sandwich where the brown bag once stood.
Adam Smith tweeted saying: ‘Standing at the bus stop chuckling to myself as I keep seeing more evidence ofthe sandwich explosion. There is pesto on the first floor windows.’
Here’s how events turned out.
The sandwich owner has not been traced.
Police said in a statement: ‘Police were called at 4.40pm to Borough High Street to reports of a suspicious package. Officers attended and the item was found to be non-suspicious. The incident was stood down at 6.05pm.’
