Brunei National Hockey Congratulates Team GB on Olympic Gold

Brunei's men and women national hockey teams have sent their congratulatory message to the victorious Great Britain women team who won hockey gold at the Rio Olympics following victory over defending champions Netherlands in the final.
The national teams showcased their support to the newly crowned Olympic champions after displaying the Union Jack flag at the Hockey Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
The national teams stayed up at 4am in the morning to witness a historic occasion unfold as Team GB collected their 24th gold of a hugely successful games by beating Netherlands 2-0 in penalties after the score had been levelled 3-3.
Lily Owsley opened the scoring before Kitty Van Male drew Netherlands level and Maartje Paumen took the lead for the Oranje.
Crista Cullen equalised for Great Britain with a fierce strike past Joyce Sombroek before Van Male bagged her second after sending goalkeeper Maddie Hinch the wrong way.
Nicola White rescued her team eight minutes from time before Maddie Hinch pulled heroics and coupled with Hollie Webb penalty to giye Great Britain Olympics gold.
As a nice gesture which symbolised the cordial relationship between the two close allies, Brunei players decided to pay tribute to the victorious Great Britain team in the subsequent days by sending a congratulatory message.
"I can only imagine the close relationship that our two countries have had for many years had something to do with it," said national goalkeeping coach Harry Baker.
"I also feel haying spent a considerable amount of time with these players that they share a very similar determination to improve and compete better when they represent their country."
"GB does it against the likes of Australia, the Netherlands, USA and Argentina whereas Brunei would love to become more competitive against teams like Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka," he further added.
The national teams were also joined by Ben Boddy, the Deputy British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, who took the time to interact and share words of wisdom to the players.
To coincide with the congratulatory message, there was also a mini Olympics tournament depicting the four semifinalists Great Britain, Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand.
