DARe Conducted Dialogue With ICC

DARE (Darussalam Enterprise) hosted a dialogue with the Indian Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, 1st September 2016 at the 1st Level, Auditorium at the Design & Technology Building located at the Anggerek Desa Technology Park.
The event began with presentations from Ilie Rahman from DARE, Emma Agaki from the Ease of Doing Business (EODB) Unit at the Prime Minister's Office and a few words from Nazeer Ahmad Zakariah, President of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Present at the event as the Q&A Panel was the Minister of Energy and Industry, Department at the Prime Minister's Office Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Bin Hj Umar, The Permanent Secretary (Industry) Adi Shamsul Bin Hj Sabli, The Deputy Permanent Secretary (IT, E-Government, and Industry) Muhammad Nor Shafiee Bin Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil, Board Member of DARE Hafimi Binti Abdul Haadii, the CEO of DARE Mr Soon Loo, and the Head of Ease of Doing Business Unit under the Prime Minister's Office Ak Mohd Abdul Aziz Bin Pg Ali Hassan.
the Q&A session of the dialogue mainly touched on employment visa, import charges and tourism development.
On the visa issues, it was shared that the current system only allows 2 year renewal for visa which does not create a pro business especially for the ICC, whose members have been around for 3 to 4 generations.
The panel shared that perhaps an arrangement can be made with the companies, however different terms for the visa will be given depending on the amount of investment made. Thus, the more a company invests, a longer term visa can be provided.
On the import issues, ICC shared that they are imposed on many processes and charges for every item of import.
The panel assured and agreed that these charges need to be competitive with their neighbouring countries, in addition to this other improvements are being made for port charges and the relevant agencies are making improvements to make the business ecosystem more efficient.
On tourism development, it was shared by the ICC that the current stopover charges, can cost BND 100 to BND 200 / each, which will discourage people from wanting to stop into Brunei, when they can directly go to the country of destination.
The panel during the dialogue assured that all issues shared today will be looked into as the aim is to improve the business ecosystem in Brunei Darussalam.
