Melaka Polls: Reporters Booted From Asahan Nomination Centre After Idris Holds Impromptu Presser, Six-Way Fight Confirmed

ASAHAN

A group of media personnel has been evicted by police from the nomination centre for the Asahan state seat.

The reporters were told to leave the centre on Monday (Nov 8) morning after Pakatan Harapan candidate Datuk Seri Idris Haron proceeded to hold an impromptu press conference against police orders.

“Get out now,” a police officer was heard saying.

The group of reporters then left the compound of the nomination centre as the police slammed the gates shut.

The remaining reporters who did not attend Idris’ spur-of-the-moment conference were allowed to stay inside the centre compound.

The nomination centre for the Asahan state seat is at the Selandar Community College in Jasin.

Idris said he viewed the six-cornered fight in Asahan positively, as it is a sign of a mature democracy.

“When democracy is ripe, there will be six candidates. I also want to make Asahan an agro-based industry (centre),” he added.

Idris also played down ambitions of coming back as chief minister.

“Idris is not important, what’s more important is what we are able to offer,” he said.

Returning officer Luqmannulhakim Mohamad Idris announced that the Asahan state seat will be a six-way fight among Idris, 50-year-old independent candidate Mohd Akir Ayob, Barisan Nasional’s Fairul Nizam Roslan, Perikatan Nasional’s Dhanesh Basil, and independent candidates Azmar Abd Hamid and Mohd Nor Salleh.

“I’ve checked their candidacy papers and there are none rejected,” said the officer.

He added that early voting for the Melaka state election has been set for Nov 16, while polling day is on Nov 20.
