Third year undergraduates from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam School of Business and Economics (UBD SBE) organised the very first Community Outreach Programme and Challenge, which took place yesterday at the Chancellor Hall.

The outreach programme was intended to raise more public awareness on the various non-government organisations (NGOs) and charity clubs in Brunei, as well as to enhance public understanding of community issues.

The event also gave members of the public an opportunity to interact and communicate with local NGOs and charity clubs.

Present as the guest of honour was the Dean of Students at UBD, Awang Saidai bin Haji Hitam.

In his welcoming remarks, Saidai said that the programme focuses on creating awareness and responsibility among the public, particularly youths, in giving back to the community. At the same time, it encourages students to understand initiatives and efforts, as well as setbacks faced by, NGOs.

He also said that a 'Challenge' would take place during the event, in which participants would propose and help address problems faced by NGOs, using technological ideas and solutions.

"Technology is at the heart of this programme, because advances in technology have undoubtedly changed our life. It has become a powerful tool that provides many opportunities for better future. It can enhance learning, as well as disseminating information at a faster speed and rate, and provide informed choices for most of us."

Among the participating NGOs were Tutong District Volunteers Group (SUKA), Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA), National Association for the Hearing-Impaired (OKP), Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAC) and Care and Action for Strays (CAS).

Meanwhile, students participating in the Challenge came from various higher educational institutions, including Laksamana College of Business (LCB), Universiti Technologi Brunei (UTB), Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology (CCCT), Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Sengkurong), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Wasan Vocational School, Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (MDPMAMB) and Micronet International College (MIC).

Afterwards, there was a presentation of prizes by the guest of honour. In first place was MIC, with the LCB in second place, and (MDPMAMB) placing third.
