(KPL) Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh on Dec 4 officiated the opening of the Thanaleng Dry Port being constructed under the Thanalaeng Dry Port and Vientiane Logistics Park Development Project, a US$727-million direct investment by local investors.

The project is part of the  National Logistic Strategy of the Lao PDR.

Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of relevant authorities also attended the launching ceremony.

The day also witnessed the historic dispatch of 12 cargo containers from the Thanaleng Dry Port for Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.

“Thanaleng Dry Port of the Thanaleng Dry Port and Vientiane Logistics Park Development Project is the materialization of the Party and government policy on turning the Lao PDR from landlocked country into a country with regional and international logistics links,” said President of Vientiane Logistics Park Chanthone Sitthixay.

Minister of Public Works and Transport Viengsavanh Siphandone said, “This international border checkpoint cargo terminal plays an important role in facilitating logistics in line with the logistic development strategy of the Lao PDR.”

“Today achievement in developing basic infrastructure and facilities that can deliver smooth, prompt, safe and effective services of the Thanaleng Dry Port at the International Border Checkpoint is a landmark in reducing transport costs and increasing competitiveness and trade and logistics potential. It will help attract and promote foreign investment in production, trade and logistic services thus contributing to driving the economy of the Lao PDR,” added the minister.
