As the world is grappling with the emergence of mosquito Zika virus carried by the same mosquitoes that spread dengue virus, religious authorities yesterday urged people to maintain cleanliness and prioritise prevention.
"Maintaining cleanliness is a branch of faith and we need to make prevention our priority such as by cleaning the mosquito breeding ground, to inspect surrounding area, to clean blocked drain, to seal bucket, pot, can and so on. One should also use insect repellent," Imams said.
"We must also supplicate and recite Zikir for the peace in mind and to live harmoniously. As people in this country, we must join hands to continuously step up efforts to fight against this disease and support the control measures by the Ministry of Health and other agencies to contain this disease."
People plagued with disease will physically become weak, their mental health affected and their quality of life jeorpadised, they added.
Among the symptoms include prolonged fever, sore eyes, headache, pain on the joints and skin rashes. Zika can be passed from a pregnant woman to her foetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects.
The Zika virus infection has been linked to cases of microcephaly, in which babies are born with underdeveloped brains.
