The country registered 70 more Covid-19 fatalities and 19,742 new cases during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry announced on Tuesday morning - the fourth consecutive day of lighter new caseloads.

This compared with the 69 coronavirus-related fatalities and 22,130 new cases reported on Monday morning.

Tuesday's figures did not include 13,008 positive results from antigen tests recorded over the past 24 hours, which would raise the total to 32,750.

The 70 new fatalities were between the ages of 33 and 98 years old.

Bangkok had 13 new deaths while there were 12 in adjacent provinces - in Pathum Thani (4), Samut Prakan (3), Samut Sakhon (3) and Nakhon Pathom (2).

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded 17 deaths - in Chon Buri (7), Ratchaburi (2), Lop Buri (2), Rayong (2), Sing Buri (1), Samut Songkhram (1), Prachin Buri (1) and Kanchanaburi (1).

The Northeast had nine fatalities - three in Ubon Ratchathani, two in Buri Ram and one each in Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Khon Kaen and Sakon Nakhon.

The South reported 14 deaths - in Phuket (4), Pattani (3), Krabi (3), Phatthalung (2), Nakhon Si Thammarat (1) and Narathiwat (1).

The North saw five more coronavirus-related fatalities - in Chiang Rai (2), Tak (1), Phrae (1) and Phitsanulok (1).

The 19,742 new coronavirus cases announced Tuesday comprised 19,636 in the general population, 54 among prison inmates and 52 arrivals from abroad.

Of the new infections in the general population, 19,392 were confirmed at hospitals and 244 via mass testing.

Bangkok had the most new cases at 2,904, followed by 1,235 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 888 in Chon Buri, 814 in Samut Prakan, 593 in Samut Sakhon, 574 in Ayutthaya, 569 in Nakhon Ratchasima, 541 in Nonthaburi, 464 in Nakhon Pathom and 446 in Pathum Thani.

The 52 imported cases came from 23 countries and included seven from Germany, six each from Cambodia and France, five each from Switzerland and the United Kingdom and three from Russia.

On Monday 221,436 people received Covid-19 treatment (down from 225,889 on the previous day) – 60,434 at hospitals (down from 63,429), including 1,390 seriously ill patients with lung inflammation (up from 1,353) and 476 dependent on ventilators (up from 453).

The 24-hour period also saw 24,125 Covid-19 patients discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Since the pandemic started in early 2020, there have been 3,226,697 Covid-19 cases, including 1,003,262 this year, with 2,981,413 complete recoveries to date.

The accumulated death toll stood at 23,848 since the beginning of the pandemic, including 2,150 so far this year.

The highest number of Covid-related fatalities in a 24-hour period was 312 recorded on Aug 13, 2021. The highest number of cases was 25,615 on Feb 26.

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 1.19 million in 24 hours to 460.15 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 4,009 to 6.07 million.

Over the past seven days, South Korea had the most new cases at 2.19 million, followed by Germany with 1.39 million, Vietnam with 1.22 million and France with 461,175.
