BADUNG, BALI
Personnel of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Bali chapter rescued a 35-year-old Canadian on Saturday evening who fell off a bridge into a 50-meter-deep ravine after allegedly trying to take a selfie in Uluwatu, Bali.
Basarnas Bali chief said the victim, identified as Sadri Alesasandro Haidar, was found conscious with severe fractures on his left arm.
“The rescue operation took around one hour, due to the terrain and victim's condition,” Basarnas Bali chief Gede Darmada said on Saturday.
The victim was rushed to Bali Jimbaran Hospital upon rescue.
South Kuta Police suspected that the victim had fallen from the Mamo Suluban Bridge while trying to take a selfie. The area is known as a favorite place for selfies during sunset.
“Many tourists take photos of the sunset from the bridge,” said South Kuta Police chief, Comr. I Ketut Sugiarta Yoga.
A local resident, Somar, searched under the bridge and found the victim after noticing the unattended motorcycle on the bridge at around 6 p.m. He later reported to local authorities.
Personnel from the local police, public order office, military, lifeguards and local residents were involved in the rescue effort.
In April, the body of a British man was discovered in a swamp next to a landfill in Denpasar after a suspected motorcycle accident.
