BANGLI, BALI

A 70-year-old American man has died after falling down the slope of Mount Batur in Kintamani, Bangli, Bali on Sunday morning, during a group hike.

Kintamani Police chief Comr. Benyamin Nikijuluw said the police suspected that Robert S Evans from Fairfield, California, was too tired on the hike back down the slope when he fell at around 7 a.m. Central Time Zone (WITA)

“He was probably not careful. He fell down about 50 meters down the slope,” Benyamin told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Robert and his group started hiking to the peak of the volcano at 3.30 a.m. WITA. The group, comprising five foreigners, came from Ubud, Gianyar, and was accompanied by Made Wage, a Mount Batur guide.

The group arrived at the peak at around 5.30 a.m. They enjoyed the sunrise before heading down.

Made Wage and one of the victim’s friends, Travis Steven Comeau, a medical doctor, rushed to help him.

“His friend tried to save his life by doing emergency assistance, but failed,” Benyamin said.

Robert’s body was later evacuated to Bangli Hospital by his friends, the local tour guide association, police and Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) personnel.

“We are now coordinating with the United States embassy. The body will be taken to Sanglah Hospital,” Benyamin said.

Preliminary investigation showed the victim suffered a fractured neck and wounds on his feet. “We did not find any sign of foul play,” Benyamin said, adding that an autopsy would be conducted upon approval from the family.
