Bloodline: PH Hinges Future On Two Leaders With Presidential Pedigree

With the dates of the inaugurations of President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio already penciled, the time for these third-generation politicians to take the lead in a hopefully post-pandemic Philippines is almost at hand.

 

Duterte, 44, will have a ceremonial inauguration in Davao City on June 19; and then, 11 days later, Marcos, 64, will have his much-awaited inauguration at the National Museum on June 30.

 

The former UniTeam candidates were proclaimed as election winners last May 25 by members of Congress sitting as the National Board of Canvassers. This was exactly 106 days after the duo launched their campaign for the May 9 elections.

 

Duterte-Carpio is the daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte, who was sworn into office as the 16th president of the Philippines on June 30, 2016. Her grandfather, the late Vicente Duterte, was the former governor of the then-unified province of Davao.

 

Marcos Jr., on the other hand, is the son of the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who occupied Malacañang from 1965 to 1986. The latter’s father is the late Mariano Marcos, a former congressman.

 

The Manila Bulletin has compiled other significant dates and details in the lives of the President-elect and Vice President-elect, whose futures will undoubtedly become more intertwined in the next six years.

 

Sept. 13, 1957- Marcos Jr. is born to late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

 

Dec. 30, 1965- His father, Marcos Sr., is elected 10th president of the Philippines.

 

Sept. 23, 1972- Marcos Sr. declares martial law.

 

1975- Marcos Jr. Is enrolled at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford to study philosophy, politics, and economics as an undergraduate.

 

1978- Marcos Jr. is awarded by Oxford a special diploma in Social Studies.

 

May 31, 1978- Duterte-Carpio is born to incumbent Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Elizabeth Zimmerman.

 

1979- Marcos Jr. enrolls at the Wharton School of Business for a Masters in Business, though he did not complete the program.

 

1980- Marcos Jr. was elected vice governor of Ilocos Norte. He is just 23 years old.

 

1983- Marcos Jr. becomes the governor of Ilocos Norte.

 

1985- His father, Marcos Sr., appointed him chairman of the Philippine Communications Satellite Corp (Philcomsat).

 

February 1986, following the 1986 EDSA Revolution, the Marcoses were ousted and exiled from the Philippines and Cory Aquino was elected president.

 

Feb. 22 to 25, 1986- EDSA People Power Revolution takes place. Marcos Sr. is ousted from Malacañang. He and his family is exiled to Hawaii.

 

Sept. 28, 1989- Marcos Sr. passes away.

 

1991- The Marcoses are allowed to return to the Philippines to face criminal charges following the death of the family patriarch.

 

June 30, 1992- Marcos Jr. serves Ilocos Norte 2nd district representative during the 9th Congress.

 

1993- Marcos Jr. marries Louise “Liza” Araneta.

 

June 30, 1998- Marcos Jr. gets elected once more as Ilocos Norte governor.

 

1999- Duterte-Carpio graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy at San Pedro College in Davao City.

 

2005- Duterte-Carpio graduates with a Law degree from San Sebastian College-Recoletos in Manila

 

2005- She passes the Philippine Bar Examination in the same year she graduated.

 

2007- She is elected the vice mayor of Davao City.

 

June 30, 2007- Marcos Jr. begins his second term as Ilocos Norte 2nd district representative during the 14th Congress.

 

October 2007- Duterte-Carpio marries fellow lawyer Manases “Mans” Carpio.

 

2010- She is elected mayor of Davao City, becoming the first female local chief executive. At 32, she is also the the youngest to be elected in the city’s history.

 

June 30, 2010- Marcos Jr. begins his six-year term as senator, which spans the 15th and 16th Congresses.

 

June 30, 2013- Duterte-Carpio’s first three-year mayoral term ends as she lets her father run for the post.

 

2016- Following his stint in the Senate, Marcos Jr. runs as an independent candidate for the vice presidency of the Philippines. He would lose a close race to then-Camarines Sur 3rd district Rep. Leni Robredo. He would protest the poll outcome.

 

June 30, 2016- Duterte-Carpio’s father becomes the 16th president of the Philippines.

 

June 30, 2016- Duterte-Carpio returns to Davao City as its mayor, alongside her older brother Paolo Duterte, who won as vice mayor.

 

Jan. 14, 2018- BBM Vlog #1 is uploaded on Marcos Jr.’s official YouTube channel.

 

February 2018- Duterte-Carpio forms the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), a regional political party that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) accredited five months later.

 

June 30, 2019- She begins her second straight term as Davao mayor.

 

Oct. 6, 2021- Marcos fileds his certificate of candidacy (COC) for the May 9, 2022 presidential race.

 

Nov. 9, 2021, Duterte-Carpio withdraws the certificate of candidacy (COC) for reelection as mayor that she filed the previous month, fueling rumors of a possible vice presidential bid.

 

Nov. 11, 2021- She resigns from the HNP and joins national party, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD). She would be named party chairperson.

 

Nov. 13, 2021- She files her COC for the vice presidency as a Lakas-CMD candidate. On the same day, the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) adopted her as the running mate to its standard-bearer, Marcos Jr.

 

Nov. 16, 2021- The People’s Reform Party (PRP) adopts Duterte-Carpio as its vice presidential candidate.

 

Nov. 19, 2021- Duterte-Carpio rejoins the HNP and also becomes party chairperson.

 

Nov. 25, 2021- The UniTeam alliance was formed by the PFP, Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), and the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP). The alliance was led by Marcos Jr. and his running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

 

Feb. 8, 2022- The campaign season for the May 9 polls begins. The UniTeam of Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio spreads their of message of unity across the country.

 

May 9, 2022- Partial and unofficial tallies of votes in the evening of the polls show Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio en route to a historic majority vote victory.

 

May 11, 2022– Two days after the elections, Marcos Jr. reveals that Duterte-Carpio has agreed to take the reins as Department of Education (DepEd) secretary. She is the first Cabinet member to be named by the incoming president.

 

May 24, 2022- The official canvassing of votes cast in the presidential and vice presidential race is carried out in Congress by the NBOC.

 

May 25, 2022- The NBOC terminates the canvassing after all 171 available certificates of canvass (COCs) are tabulated. Marcos Jr. and Duterte-Carpio are proclaimed victors by Congress.

 

June 19, 2022- Duterte-Carpio will have a ceremonial inauguration in Davao City.

 

June 30, 2022- Marcos Jr. will be inaugurated at the National Museum in Ermita, Manila. (With reports from Ellson Quismorio)
